The Infinite Mindset for a project is like fitting a square peg in a round hole. A project is a set of tasks that must be completed within a defined (finite) timeline. So, how can this contradicting mindset apply to projects? And why should we care? Let’s explore.
Benefits and Essential Attributes of an Infinite Mindset
The concept of an infinite mindset, coined by James Carse and popularized by Simon Sinek, challenges the traditional notion of winning and losing in business. It’s a business philosophy that emphasizes companies to:
- Focus on long-term growth & sustainability instead of short-term profits or victories.
- Constantly learn. Seek ways to improve products, services, and processes based on feedback from customers, employees and colleagues.
- Be willing to change and adapt to new challenges and opportunities.
- Focus on collaboration with others rather than competing. Achieve more by working together than by working alone.
- Adopt an abundance and generous mindset. Be open to share knowledge and expertise with others.
Essential attributes for an Infinite Mindset are:
- Advance a Just Cause (i.e., higher purpose)
- Build Trusting Teams (with psychological safety)
- Study Worthy Rivals (i.e., learn for worthy rivals)
- Prepare for Existential Flexibility (with continual learning & growth)
- Demonstrate the Courage to Lead (i.e., courage to make difficult decisions, challenge the status quo, and lead with integrity and purpose)
If you now replace the word ‘business’ with ‘project,’ you get a few wonderful guidelines and benefits that are essential for managing projects successfully, and crucial for enhancing the Project Experience (PX). The Abundance perspective helps you focus on long-term value and continuous improvement, learn and seek ways to improve your project, be open to feedback, focus on collaboration, and share knowledge and expertise with others.
Think of a business as a chain of projects or each project as a bead in the garland of a continuum. If we implement the infinite framework in each project, the aggregate outcome is a business with an infinite mindset.

Conclusion:
Relentless and perverted pursuit of profit smothers the voice of justice and fairness and negatively impacts human behavior and societal values. These are just a few of the vices of capitalism as we practice today.
The key to this mindset is the abundance mentality. We achieve ‘competitive advantage’ by sharing, learning, and creating long-term value instead of holding things close to our vest. It’s not the greed that fuels this mindset; it appeals to the more sensible, wise, and better angels within us.
It does not try to take away the oxygen from capitalism, but purifies the air so that big C can breathe better.
